To financially support the development of the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University, Professor Chen-Ning Yang in 1998 established and registered in Hong Kong the Foundation of Tsinghua University Center for Advanced Study. The Foundation has since received notable donations from Messrs. 查济民、蒙明伟、查懋声、蔡冠深 and others. Over the years, the Foundation’s support has enabled the Institute to improve the working and living conditions of its faculty and staff, and to help initiate recruiting talents to the ranks of the Insitute.

The Institute has received donations through the Tsinghua Educational Foundtion, N.A. (清华北美教育基金会) from its supporters in the United States, with major donations coming from Mr. 黄长风, James & Marilyn Simons, and Dunson & Cynthia Cheng. The Chern-Simons Hall, a 12-unit guest apartment complex for academic visitors, was built on campus with the Simons’ donation. The donation from the Chengs helped establish C.N. Yang Chairs in the University, which currently supports two such chairs in the Institute.
